I watched this when it was originally aired on tv a few years ago over the Christmas period. My daughter and I watched it together and loved it. Then we discovered Acorn released it on DVD - Great news! My daughter was really intrigued with what happened to children during the war and we found this both educational as well as a magical fairytale story.

We went to see the west end performance recently and enjoyed the DVD much more. The show featured adult actors playing the child parts which did not have the same effect as the original.

Wonderful adaptation Review by Bill

First the Nina Bawden book, then the wonderful BBC adaptation starring Alun Armstrong, Geraldine McEwan and Pauline Quirke and now the West End play.

When I saw the play advertised in the local paper it reminded me of just how good this BBC version of the book was and I am delighted to say that when my DVD arrived (very quickly thank you Acorn) the film was every bit as good as I remember. A great story, wonderfully acted - one to watch over and over again.
