The story follows two siblings evacuated from London to a small Welsh village during the Second World War. Far from the boring and quiet lifestyle they expect to find on their arrival, Carrie and Nick Willow discover a world of curses, witches and druids, where nothing is quite as it seems.
The children meet Mr Evans the bully, his lovely sister Auntie Lou, Hepzibah Green, the strange Mr Johnny and extravagant Mrs Gotobed. Carrie seeks to make sense of the wierd and wonderful characters in the magical village whilst helping the adults run their complicated lives. But can thirteen year old Carrie understand what her actions ultimately mean?
