Driving in the 1950s wasn’t just a means to an end, it was a pastime with a Sunday drive often being the highlight of the week. This all changed with the introduction of the motorway in 1958, when getting from A to B as quickly and efficiently as possible became the priority.

In this series, Richard Wilson undertakes six of Britain’s finest drives from the 1950s. Following the routes as detailed in the various guides from the time, Richard puts his modern automatic in the garage and gets behind the wheels of six classic, vintage cars. Along the way Richard meets interesting characters who have some insight into how each route has changed, and how Britain has changed with it.
