The story of young Esther Summerson, left alone after the death of her Aunt, and John Jarndyce, who offers her a home. The plot has some of the most famous twists in literary history. These include an inheritance dispute tied up for generations in the dysfunctional English court system and a case of spontaneous human combustion.
